Wanna know if you’re old? Check your birth certificate or driver’s license (or other suitable public or private record) with a calendar then do the math. That’ll usually give you a pretty good idea. But really, the way you know for sure is whether when someone asks you how you’re doing, you feel at least tempted to tell the hapless inquisitor your latest ailment. I turn 39 this summer. While that’s not really old by the first measure (since I’ve heard tell that 50 is the new 30) by the latter, well, that’s another story.
So, how am I doing? you ask, innocently.
Well lemme tell ya… it’s been a week, 3 chiropractor visits, about a hundred (ok really more like 10-12) ice packs applied, and still, not much improvement in my neck. Or is it my shoulder? That depends on when you ask me, I suppose. Apparently 4 hours on the trainer last Saturday morning, followed by what may or may not have been a sleeping error, left me in serious pain all day last Sunday. I was barely able to move my head to the right, and with limited mobility to the left. Plus there was the delightful on-again-off-again numbness/tingling in my arm and left hand, which is always kinda scary, in a fun sort of way. Various muscles in my shoulder and neck have been in nearly constant spasm ever since, and I even had to resort to taking a prescription strength pain mediation Sunday night. None since then, so no need to call a rehab clinic. Indeed, I’ve found that even my old standby, Vitamin I (aka Ibuprofen) has relatively little effect on this particular problem. I could use some relief though. Any ideas, short of finally breaking down and seeing the neck surgeon to discuss fusing the C-5 C-6 vertebrae, where the herniation is?
Then there’s my knee. Or is it my hamstring? Either way, the back of my knee hurts when I extend my right leg. A stiff, sort of tight feeling, rather than real pain. Unless of course I’m trying to bend it all the way… you know, like you do when you stretch your quad muscles. Then: YOWZA. Oh well. Who needs that kind of flexion anyway, right? Totally overrated.
But let’s not forget about my hand. At least for this one I’m relatively sure of the problem. There’s a cyst (or is it tumor?) on the tendon that leads to my ringer finger. It’s on the palm of my hand and it’s grown to the point where I can’t exactly flatten that finger the same way I can the rest of the fingers on my hand. When I accidentally do try: YOWZA. It used to just hurt when I did “this”, so I stopped doing "that", as Momma/Poppa Bear’s best medical advice would have me do. But now, thanks to it’s increasing mass, it hurts when I ride. And I wouldn’t be much of a Rider X, if I didn’t ride, now would I? So, hand surgeon, here I come, prob’ly sooner rather than later. That is, if I can get my neck calmed down long enough to need to bother.
So, how old are you all?

my poor baby! No jokes, no smart remarks, just some deep sympathy. I know you have a wonderful support system in Li'l Lotto and friends in your immediate area, but I find it hurts to have my kids hurt. If there is anything I can do, if you need any help or want any company, that can be arranged. Baby yourself, let it heal. When AJ was just 20, he complained to Dr ongena about a problem, and was told that he wasn't as young as he used to be.
You are indeed in our thoughts and in our prayers.
Still older than you, baby sister! This summer I will be The Answer to Life, The Universe, And Everything (for those of you not familiar with Douglas Adams, that would be 42). Sorry you're hurting, though. Nothing like not being able to move your head around - I went through lots of that this fall. Does it get so bad that you are unable to roll over in bed? I really hate that! And my knee only hurts if I actually use it. So far, my hands are okay. I do have a nasty ingrown toenail, though...
Sorry you're feeling it so vividly these days. Might I recommend my panacea for all ailments of the back, neck, shoulder, hamstring, etc. Say it with me: sssstttrrreeeeeeettchchch. In with the good air, out with the bad air. Once you can put your palms on the floor (with your knees straight) your aches and pains will be gone. Mostly. Some exclusions apply.
As for moi, I've a lovely little hematoma on the side of my left index finger, some rug burn looking scrapes on my shoulders and a litttle extra soreness in my bad knee, all as a result of yesterday's workout: humping 55 sheets of 1/2 inch 4'x 8' drywall from the front lawn to the upstairs rooms where today the hombres from Quality Drywall hung them by the neck until dead. Other'n that, just the usual assortment of cuts, scrapes, lesions and contusions on hands, arms, legs and face. Fortunately nothing keeping my off the bike. No it's work that's doing that. Work and the crappy weather. 57 and partly cloudy: I wouldn't send a knight out on a dogma like that.
Maybe all you need is a little bone warming weather, whether we ride in it or not. How's a month from now lookin'? Good. Me too. Now go stretch.
Thanks mom. I'm ok though, really. Mostly just a case of woe-is-me disease, which has been amplified by this good for nothing weather. I imagine you're in the same boat though so I know I can't really complain there either. (Then again: For my mile-ish walk to the train tomorrow morning it's supposed to be -25 windchill. Oy!) Lemme guess though, you're still walking with Jane. I hope not. Use that fancy new treadmill!! But really, I didn't mean to make you worry, or be in pain - there's no need, I assure you. Oh yeah, and when are you and Papa B coming to visit? I forgot to write it down, and now I don't remember. A little help here?
Loved the Douglas Adams reference, sis. Now I have 42 to look forward to. Hopefully between then and now I can figure out how to use the answer for niceness instead of evil...
But Tango, I've BEEN stretching. Bikram Yoga, 'member? Altho, I'm not entirely sure that hasn't had a hand in the spot of bother in my knee. It hurts something awful when I try to do the siting on your heels/kneeling stuff they make you do. But the neck thing stopped me from even doing that last week. However, if the neck feels as not-horrible as it did today, I'm headed back to Yoga tomorrow night. As for the warm weather, how's the March 14-15th-ish weekend look for you? I'm ready!
