Drought

So we're in the middle or near the end or just starting a big old drought here. Maybe you've heard. Prolly not. Either way, I drive (or ride) past the Little River Reservoir several times a week on my way to my big job and it's pretty shocking to see how low the water is and to remember how long it's been this low. So the other day the mayor of Raliegh proposes temporarily raising water rates for that city by 50% and encourages each citizen to reduce their consumption to a mere 25 gallons of water per day. I had no idea how much water this household consumed, but I happen retain most utility bills in a handy little file thingy. So for the most recent statement, our consumption was 6. That's right. Six. Period.
That is exactly what I said. Six what? In the last 60 days we used six water units. Not entirely helpful. So I go out and pull the cover off the meter and it indicates that each unit equals 6 cubic feet. I felt so stupid for not knowing that. Who doesn't know that? I can hear all y'all laughing yer arses off about how one person can live forty some years and not know that. So you doubtless also know that a cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons. So 6x6=36 cubic feet x 7.5=270 gallons. Divide by the number of days [60], then by the number of people [2] and you get 2.25 gallons per person per day. Clearly something must be wrong with our water meter. We need to increase our consumption 1000% in order to conserve.
Seriously, though, something must be wrong with the meter: for the whole year we used about 2650 gallons, and that's with B living here half the time. That averages about 3 gallons per person per day. Flushing a toilet is a gallon and a half. And B is constitutionally incapable of showering for less than 15 minutes a day. I know most of you have wells, but does anybody on a city system have any idea how much water they use? Inquiring minds . . . .

In our little berg, unless you've upgraded your water service (like we'll prob'ly have to do here pretty soon) water bills are all estimated. So for our house, they estimate your water useage based on a family of 4 and we pay waterever the going rate is for that much water. Now if/when we upgrade, that will change - it'll be a meter where they can drive by, point some sort of crazy electronic device at our house, and get an actual water useage bill. Given how much we shower at our clubs, I think it'll be much better for us. We'll see though. Now, you may be asking what they are estimating our usage at. For that, I have to turn it over to Lil Lotto...

Well, we used 32 units in the last 90 days. I don't know if our units are the same as yours, and I'm way too lazy to go check the meter right now (maybe tomorrow). Assuming units are the same, though, we'd have to use MORE water to hit 25 gallons per person per day, too. 1/3 units per day, roughly, or 2x7.5=15 gallons per day. Divide by four, and that's less than 4 gallons per person per day. No way! Even with our flow-restricting shower heads, that's only two minutes of shower or one flush per person, and you can forget about dishes or laundry. Something is wrong with the calculations, methinks. I don't know what, but something. Now I'm curious - I'll have to look at my meter tomorrow.

Hard as it may be to believe, I can't find the water bills from the Motor City house. But it occurs to me that our gas meter measures cubic feet but the bill units are CCF's or 1 unit equals 100 cubic feet.

As far as our usage of well water, our water softener has a meter in it that gives a running average usage that right now reads about 70 gallons per day but has been as high as 125 over the holidays with a houseful of people. With just the two of us it is often in the low 50's.
