The New Water Bill is Here!

I couldn't find a linkable clip of Steve Martin in The Jerk wherein he's going all wacko over the arrival of the new telephone book. But the new water bill is here. And our consumption doubled, that's right, doubled, over this two month period. Thirteen units in 63 days. Except it didn't just double. Turns out the Poppa Bear was right again - the meter measures hundred cubic feet, or 748 gallon units. Which means that we used around 9700 gallons of water. And we were gone for a week. Although B was here some of the time. Still, 160 gallons a day. Doesn't seem possible.
And even the last bill's 6 units translates into seventy-some gallons. Still too much, though below the sixty-some per capita average in Durham.
So now I feel compelled to ascertain how much water a load of laundry uses, a 5 minute shower, a load in the dishwasher. I know you can't wait, so I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Okay, so that means we're using about 250 gallons per day, which should be enough for a family of 10? Ouch. Still, considering my shower loving clan, we aren't doing as bad as I thought we might.
As for your double usage, do you know if any of the reading were estimates?

Tragically, all the readings are actual and accurate. Scary, huh? Funny how rapidly luxuries turn into necessities. Before indoor hot and cold running water nobody used no 60 gallons a day. If you had to hand pump and carry into the house all your water, use would plummet.
The only good thing is that 9700 gallons only cost 20 bucks. The bad news is that doubling that cost would be a weak incentive to use less water.

Thanks for rounding up the last of the stray cats. KubotaDave has made clear that whatever is done is fine, so as long as Momitor and woodbutcher/baker44 [is she going to be baker45 in a couple of months?] get on board, we're good. Thanks.
